— The busiest freeway in North America is Highway 401 through Toronto, Canada. It carries over half a million drivers daily and is often over 18 lanes wide.
— The most impressive interchange where I live (SF Bay Area) is the Macarthur Maze. It connects I-80, I-880, and I-580 and many of its onramps & offramps are over 1 mile long. Unfortunately, it is also the most congested – and in the Bay Area, that says quite a lot.
— If you travel on I-80 in Berkeley between Emeryville and Richmond, you end up traveling east and west at the same time. Don’t believe me? See for yourself.
My top 3 favorite highways & interchanges:
1. I-295/I-495 interchange (Fort Washington, MD)
A spectular engineering masterpiece that overlaps 3 states: Maryland, Virginia, and (if you count it as a state) DC. Linked to numerous other spectacular interchanges and offers a beautiful view of the Potomac River:
2. Nanpu Bridge (Shanghai, China)
The place to go if you’d like a free roller coaster ride. Also if you want to see one of the weirdest interchanges on the planet.
3. “High 5” interchange (Dallas, TX)
They say everything in Texas is supersized. So are the freeways.
